It is very important to increase decision making skills, memory and attention in children so that their intelligence remains focused. In a recent research conducted by researchers of ‘Waseda University’, doing light-intensity exercises has a very positive effect on the brain of children. Studies have shown that short bursts of seemingly simple exercise can increase blood circulation in the prefrontal cortex. The part of the brain that is responsible for important positive functions. This research can help in increasing the quality of life of children and improving their lifestyle. Especially for those children who do not do much physical activity.
Concern about children’s brain development
It has been observed that approximately 81 percent of children worldwide do not meet the recommended levels of physical activity on a regular basis. This can significantly affect their cognitive functions and brain development. In general, existing studies suggest moderate to vigorous exercise for better cognitive development – however, a recent study suggests a physical workout that children can easily do.
Study author Takashi Naito, a doctoral student at Waseda University and visiting researcher at the Waseda Institute of Human Performance, said they examined the effect of light exercise on brain blood flow. Then they created a workout routine that can be easily done at home or in between classes.
This study was conducted on 41 healthy children studying in school. He was taught many easy exercises which can be done anywhere. The exercises are as follows.
Upward stretch (reaching upward with folded hands)
Shoulder stretch (extending one arm across the chest)
Elbow rotation (widely rotating the elbow)
Trunk twist (twisting the upper body)
washing hands (rubbing hands together)
Thumb and pinky (finger dexterity exercise)
Single-leg balancing (standing on one leg for balance)
Research results
It was observed that when students did these exercises, blood flow increased in the prefrontal cortex. This increased blood flow is a sign of increased brain activity, especially in areas of the brain that are responsible for decision making, attention, focus and memory.
